State Budget Cuts Jeopardize Mother Baby Center
2009 was a tough year to provide in-home services to newborns and their mothers in Whatcom County. In July, Washington State budget cuts forced a reduction in funding for Maternity Support Services, resulting in dramatic cuts to the Mother Baby Center’s budget this year and into the future as well as a temporary suspension of home based services starting December 25th 2009.
“This latest reduction in funding from the State came at a time when we had finally achieved a balanced budget, reduced our debt load and looked with optimism to the future,” Ms Pippard states. “We are asking for your support again as we weather this latest crisis and seek new alternatives to State funding. No donation is too small to make a difference.”
Ms Tracy Pippard, President of the MBC Board of Directors, states, “You (or someone you know) have likely experienced the peace of mind that comes with a visit from an experienced, reassuring  Mother Baby Center professional during pregnancy and those first few months at home. In fact, in 2008 Mother Baby Center provided services for more than one-third of all pregnancies in Whatcom County. The services of the Mother Baby Center contribute to healthier babies and families in Whatcom County.”
One and a half years ago, Mother Baby Center experienced a budget shortfall and asked the public for help and support. The public of Whatcom County responded and $60,000 was raised in three months time to help MBC to continue services. Since that time, the board and staff of MBC have worked hard to reduce expenses and find alternate solutions within the community.
The Mother Baby Center is committed to supporting Whatcom County’s new mothers and their babies in the years ahead. Tax-deductible contributions may be made by sending a check to: Mother Baby Center, 4120 Meridian Street, Suite 240, Bellingham, 98226, or donating here.
